By Uncategorized

***For Immediate Release***

With great pride we am pleased to announce that Olympic Gold Medal Champion Tyler George is now confirmed as a celebrity skip for this year’s 29th Annual Kurl for Kids Charityspiel!  A long time member of the Kurl for Kids Family, we could not have been more proud of him and his team’s accomplishment at this year’s Olympics in PyeongChang.  When Tyler confirmed yesterday that he would be back this year to celebrate together it reminded me about how strong this K4K family bond is and how much he looked forward to celebrating this amazing accomplishment together. #k4kfamily #familymatters #imnotcryingyourecrying #olympics

28th Kurl for Kids Fundraising Total

By Fundraising

IMG_3053As we travel down our road to thirty, the 28th Kurl for Kids is now in the books.  With the additional donations that have come through and some great work by the committee, we have discovered that our initial fundraising total announcement was a little low.  We are pleased to announce that together we have raised over $95,200!!   Just over $82,200 will be going to the Oakville Hospital Foundation and just over $13,000 to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.

Special thanks to the whole Kurl for Kids Family including those who donated, the sponsors, the committee, the participants, the volunteers, Michelle Smith and the awesome staff at the Oakville Curling Club, Vern’s Comb Band, DJ Garry, the Holiday Inn and their amazing staff, Shannon Clark for her heartwarming story, and the skips that flew in or drove to make it another banner year!

Well done everyone!

Ok…phew…time to start planning the 29th!

In The Beginning…the birth of Kurl for Kids as told by one of the founders, Gene Glaze

By History

On the eve of the 28th Annual Kurl for Kids Celebrity Charityspiel, I am pleased to add a piece of the story of how this great event began.  Special thanks to Gene Glaze for reaching out and writing this piece.

-Bill Garner

Founded in 1989 by: Ed Werenich, Neil Harrison, John Brockest, Gene Glaze, Alison Goring at the Avonlea CC.

Committee:  John Brockest, Neil Harrison, Paul Savage Gene Glaze, Alison Goring (and eventually Susan Brower)

John Brockest volunteered to Chair the planning etc.. BUT, in his negotiating with the Avonlea owner Mr. Lou Detzki, he lost his patience when it came to the $$$ and he became very frustrated and resigned. That’s when I took over to Chair the meetings.

Neil Harrison and Paul Savage were the real driving force to make this event a success by lining up the celebrity skips across Canada.

Initially we didn’t have a charity lined up. Surprisingly THAT turned out to be a problem as we tried asking several charity’s to accept what money we would raise. I had previously worked with Whipper Billy Watson and his “March of Dimes” fund raising events. His main assistant Susan Brower was a friend of mine and I asked her for help. She immediately accepted and Whipper’s fund raising efforts at the time were for the Crippled Children’s Hospital in Scarborough. Later to be known as the Hugh McMillan Center. She worked super hard for us and attended ALL of our meetings from then on and for years afterwards, untill her passing in I think 2009. She was solely responsible for persuading  Air Canada to donate 12 FREE airline tickets from anywhere in Canada to fly in celebrity skips. That lasted for 3 of the years I was involved with the 3rd year they cut it back to 10 tickets.

Alison Goring’s appearance and Werenich winning at the worlds in 1990 added a Major part to the 1st event. BUT Ed. Didn’t want any part in the organizing, period. In our 2nd. year Alison Goring became a big part in the arranging  for the women’s celebrity skips.  While Paul Savage and Neil Harrison continued arranging for the men’s celebrity skips. Sixty four celebrity curlers from all over Canada representing a total of over 125 purple hearts.  I wish a complete list was available but to name a few…. Sam Richardson, Garnet and Don Campbell, Al Hackner, Rick Lang, Russ and Glenn Howard. Wayne Middaugh, Gould,  Ian Tetley, Pat Perroud, John Kawaga, Don Bartlett, Pat Ryan, Art Lobel, Jack  MacDuff, Alf  Phillips, Bernie Sparks, Mike Harris.

That first years event raised $120,000.00, all funds going to the Crippled Children’s Hospital later re-named The Hugh MacMillan Hospital.

Tony Wagner took over from me after the third year’s event.

Signed…. Gene Glaze.

How to Raise 500 Dollars in 7 Days

By Fundraising

Hey K4K Family!

With just over a week to go and Chelsea Carey just announced as a celebrity skip, it’s time to kick the fundraising into high gear.

We know it’s not easy to raise money, so here are a few ideas from the Oakville Hospital Foundation on how to get started.

How to raise $500 in 7 Days

  1. Show your commitment to Kurl for Kids and kick start your fundraising with a $50 donation. $50 = $50
  2. Ask 3 family members to donate $25.
    $75 = $125
  3. Ask 5 friends to donate $15.
    $75 = $200
  4. Ask 5 co-workers to donate $15.
    $75 = $275
  5. Ask 3 businesses you frequent to donate $25.
    $75 = $350
  6. Ask 15 of your Facebook friends for a $10 donation.
    $150 = $500

Give one or all of these ideas a try and see what happens! Looking forward to seeing you all on April 13th.

I am happy to announce that we have added two new celebrity skips to the list.

Don Bartlett, eight time Alberta Champion, two time Brier Champion, World silver Medalist, Olympic Silver Medalist and three time World Curling Tour Player’s Champion is back at it!  A K4K alumni favourite!

Returning after almost 10 years, Mary-Anne Arsenault is happy to be joining the K4K family in our 28th year.  Mary-Anne is a twelve Nova Scotia Champion, five time Hearts Gold Medalist (including four consecutive), two time World Gold Medalist and a Bronze at the 2001 Olympic Trials.  Mary-Anne certainly brings a wealth of experience and hardware to our Charityspiel.

Please help me in welcoming Don and Mary-Anne to the 28th Kurl for Kids Charityspiel.
